Must-Visit Sake Bars and Umeshu Shop in Tokyo, Japan — Curated by Jinny PRUMPLUM

Updated: Jan 17

Tokyo takes sake seriously—but never boring. From standing bars where locals pop in for “just one” (that turns into three) to sleek hideouts serving rare bottles you’ll want to Google later, the city knows how to pour with style. Must Visit Tokyo Sake and Umeshu by Jinny PRUMPLUM is your fun-loving guide to Tokyo’s best sake spots—where great drinks, good vibes, and memorable nights come together. Sip curious, drink slow (or not), and let Tokyo do the rest.

LET'S GO!!

Orihara Shoten is a standing sake bar run by a long-established shop founded in 1924. With counters made from reused bottle crates and snacks inspired by regulars, it captures the warmth of Tokyo’s shitamachi culture. Just one minute from Monzen-Nakacho Station near Fukagawa Fudoson Temple, it’s a perfect local stop for a classic Tokyo sip.

Just 40 meters from the station, you’ll recognize the bar immediately—look for the crowd of people standing out front, drinks in hand. 🍶

When you step inside, you’ll be amazed by the selection—more than 100 sake labels waiting to be tried! How to order: Pick a bottle from the fridge, bring it to the cashier to pay,and don’t forget to return the bottle to the same spot afterward!

They also serve Japanese Wine!

My tip: choose a bottle you won’t be able to find back in Bangkok! ✨

The bar was packed with locals, and we were the only tourists there—it felt like discovering a hidden spot known only to Tokyo insiders.

Opening hours: Monday–Friday: 12:00–22:00, Saturday–Sunday: 11:00–22:00

And then we walked to 'First Wakayama Umeshu shop in Tokyo 'Umeshudo' just 260 meters away from Orihara Shoten!

Umeshudo — Tokyo’s umeshu specialist that’s a treat for anyone curious about Japan’s ume fruit-based spirits.

At this cozy Monzen-Nakacho shop, the focus is umeshu from Wakayama Prefecture — the heartland of Japan’s plum production known for its high-quality ume fruit and rich, balanced liqueurs. Wakayama ume (often Nanko-ume) gives umeshu its deep aroma and fruity sweetness, and the shop only stocks authentic, carefully selected bottles sourced from producers there.

Inside, you can:

  • Explore a variety of unique umeshu styles — from lighter, drinkable ones to rich, full-bodied craft versions.

  • Try a tasting set where you compare 3 different umeshu for about ¥500 — a fun and affordable way to find your favorite.

  • Pick up rare bottles and gift packs you probably won’t find in regular Tokyo liquor shops.

It’s a perfect spot to discover Japan’s beloved Umeshu culture in a friendly, easygoing setting (and ideal for souvenirs too!). 🍑

The LAST ONE!

  1. Masutoku 1910 at Shimbashi Station 📍You NEED to save it This is one of my favorite spots in Tokyo—and a place I’ll definitely return to.

Located near Shimbashi Station, this sake bar and shop offers more than 200 options to try. It’s run by the same company as Orihara Shoten, with the same easy system and pricing, but a completely different selection of sake and drinks—making it just as exciting to explore.

Masutoku Sake Bar is kakuuchi style, standing bar. Inside, you’ll find around 200 varieties of sake, Umeshu, fruit shu, beer, and brewed liqueurs from all over Japan, so there’s plenty to explore whether you’re new to sake or already a fan. There’s no table charge — you simply pay for each cup — and the friendly staff are always happy to suggest something interesting.

Classic snacks like oden and nostalgic treats add to the atmosphere, making it a great stop for a quick drink after work or a casual dive into Japanese drinking culture.

We tried as many sake as we could to experience different styles, and since it’s right by the station, we didn’t have to worry about missing the last train. That freedom let us explore without limits—turning the night into a celebration that felt like our last day in Tokyo!

Open hours: Monday - Saturday 12.00 - 23.00 and Sunday 10.00 - 21.00
